Sejarah Kerajaan Sriwijaya merupakan kerajaan Budha yang bangkit pada era ke-7 dibuktikan dengan adanya prasasti kedukan Bukit di Palembang (682). Sriwijaya menjadi salah satu kerajaan yang besar lengan berkuasa di Pulau Sumatera. Nama Sriwijaya berasal dari bahasa Sanskerta berupa "Sri" yang artinya bercahaya dan "Wijaya" berarti kemenangan sehingga sanggup diartikan dengan kemenangan yang bercahaya atau gemilang.

Pada catatan perjalanan I-Tsing, pendeta Tiongkok yang pernah mengunjungi Sriwijaya pada tahun 671 selama 6 bulan menunjukan bahwa sentra Kerajaan Sriwijaya berada pada daerah Candi Muara Takus (Provinsi Riau sekarang). Kerajaan Sriwijaya dipimpin oleh Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanasa sebagai raja pertama.

Kejayaan Kerajaan Sriwijaya

Kerajaan Sriwijaya berjaya pada era 9-10 Masehi dengan menguasai jalur perdagangan laut di Asia Tenggara. Sriwijaya telah menguasai hampir seluruh kerajaan Asia Tenggara, diantaranya, Jawa, Sumatera, Semenanjung Malaya, Thailand, Kamboja, Vietnam, dan Filipina. Sriwijaya menjadi pengendali rute perdaganagan lokal yang mengenakaan bea cukai kepadaa setiap kapal yang lewat. Hal ini lantaran Sriwijaya menjadi penguasa atas Selat Sunda dan Malaka. Selain itu, Kerajaan Sriwijaya juga mengumpulkan kekayaannya dari jasa pelabuhan dan gudang perdagangan yang melayani pasar Tiongkok dan India.

Keruntuhan Kerajaan Sriwijaya

Kerajaan Sriwijaya mengalami keruntuhan dikala Raja Rajendra Chola, penguasa Kerajaan Cholamandala menyerang dua kali pada tahun 1007 dan 1023 M yang berhasil merebut bandar-bandar kota Sriwijaya. Peperangan ini disebabkan lantaran Kerajaan Sriwijaya dan Kerajaan Cholamandala bersaing pada bidang perdagangan dan pelayaran. Dengan demikian, tujuan dari serangan Kerajaan Cholamandala tidak untuk menjajah melainkan untuk meruntuhkan armada Sriwijaya. Hal ini menjadikan ekonomi Kerajaan Sriwijaya semakin melemah lantaran para pedagang yang biasanya berdagang di Kerajaan Sriwijaya terus berkurang. Tidak hanya itu, kekuatan militer Sriwijaya juga semakin melemah sehingga banyak daerah bawahannya yang melepaskan diri. Akhirnya, Kerajaan Sriwijaya runtuh pada era ke-13.

Peninggalan Kerajaan Sriwijaya

Kerajaan Sriwijaya meninggalkan beberapa prasasti, diantaranya :

1. Prasasti Kedukan Bukit
Prasati ini ditemukan di Palembang pada tahun 605 SM/683 M. Isi dari prasasti tersebut ialah perluasan 8 hari yang dilakukan Dapunta Hyang dengan 20.000 tentara yang berhasil menaklukkan beberapa daerah sehingga Sriwijaya menjadi makmur.

2. Prasasti Talang Tuo
Prasasti yang ditemukan pada tahun 606 SM/684 M ini ditemukan di sebelah barat Palembang. Isinya wacana Dapunta Hyang Sri Jayanaga yang menciptakan Taman Sriksetra demi kemakmuran semua makhluk.

3. Prasasti Kota Kapur
Prasasti ini bertuliskan tahun 608 SM/686 M yang ditemukan di Bangka. Isiny mengenai permohonan kepada Dewa untuk keselamatan Kerajaan Sriwijaya beserta rakyatnya.

4. Prasasti Karang Birahi
Prasasti yang ditemukan di Jambi ini isinya sama dengan prasasti Kota Kapur wacana permohonan keselamatan. Prasasti Karang Birahi ditemukan pada tahun 608 SM/686 M.

5. Prasasti Talang Batu
Prasasti ini ditemukan di Palembang, namun tidak ada angka tahunnya. Prasasti Talang Batu berisi wacana kutukan terhadap pelaku kejahatan dan pelanggar perintah raja.

6. Prasasti Palas di Pasemah
Prasasti ini juga tidak berangka tahun. Ditemukan di Lampung Selatan yang berisi wacana keberhasilan Sriwijaya menduduki Lampung Selatan.

7. Prasasti Ligor
Ditemukan pada tahun 679 SM/775 M di tanah genting Kra. Menceritakan bahwa Sriwijaya di bawah kekuasaan Darmaseta.
